Understanding the Carnival Cruise Sign and Sail Account

When you take a Carnival cruise you may be surprised to find out that you won’t be able to use cash for much of anything on the ship. Instead, Carnival uses what they call the ‘Sign and Sail Account’. With this, you can still make purchases on the ship, but they are billed to your account instead of you paying cash. This can be beneficial, but it can also get you in trouble. If you’re new to cruising, here are a few things you should know about the Carnival cruise sign and sail program.

How it Works

When you arrive for your Carnival cruise vacation you will need to sign up for the sign and sail program. This is done once you are on the ship. The paperwork for this would have been included with the Carnival cruise packages that you received. You will need to present a major credit card, debit card, or put cash in to the account. As you make purchases on the Carnival cruise ship the purchases are billed to your sign and sail account. It means you don’t need to worry about carrying cash around with you. Everyone on the ship is required to carry the sign and sail card with them. This is room key, and it serves as proof that you are a passenger on the Carnival cruise.

Holds and Deposits

If you choose to use a credit or debit card, the card will be authorized for $30 for partial cruise days, and $50 for full days. To figure out the amount of the hold, look at the cruise itinerary before you leave. If you are taking a 6 day cruise with 3 full days on the ship, you can expect an authorization of $240 to be obtained. Some of the best deals on carnival cruises will offer onboard credits to your sign and sail account. This is great, but it doesn’t take away from the authorization amount placed. It just means you have free money in the account to spend. If you go over the authorization amount, your card will be charged for any additional amounts you incur. If you choose to pay cash, you will have a minimum amount for a deposit that you have put on your account based on the length of the cruise. The deposits for Carnival cruising will vary from $100 to $350. When you reach your account limit, you’ll need to place more money in the account. Any unused amounts are refunded to you before you leave the ship.

Cautions About Carnival Cruise Sign and Sail

The Carnival cruise sign and sail program can be great, but it can also make it much easier for you to overspend. If you have children with you, they need cards as well. If you don’t take care with this you can easily max out your credit card or drain your bank account. For children it’s a good idea to place restrictions on their accounts. For instance, it’s possible to place a daily limit on their spending. Even as an adult it can be easy to overstretch yourself. If you’ve booked cheap cruise deals, you can easily negate any savings by spending too much. Most people suggest using a credit card with a low interest rate that won’t tie up your checking account. Cash is also suggested by many people who have cruised in the past. Using cash can make your Carnival cruise experience much more affordable.
