King Rama I moved to Bangkok in 1782 from Thonburi. When this happened, the Grand Palace was built. It was made to be the official residence for the royalty. Since then, it has served this very same capacity even though the current king happened to make his home Chitralada Palace his current residence. This palace can very easily be toured while on foot.
